My name is Kenechukwu Ezeonyim. I have just finished my third year at Imperial College London and I am currently undertaking an Industrial Placement at Nova Scientia. My job description is Hardware Intern.

So far, at Nova Scientia, I have mostly worked with power related testing. I programmed the start-up and shutdown sequence of the instruments being developed so we can turn them on and off by pressing a button. I also implemented a digital Pulse-Width modulation control for the cooling fan.

Another major part of my work is scoping projects. I, alongside a fellow intern, am developing a data acquisition system to characterise the laser drivers. We are also characterising one ourselves. In addition to this, I designed and implemented a software PID control which sets the ground work for the company to begin to design its own laser drivers.

The rest of my work is testing procedures. I am designing breakout boxes and goods-in procedures for various parts that will be arriving shortly.

Hello! I’m Udai Arneja, a current undergraduate student at Imperial College London studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering with Management. Over the last four months I have been interning with Nova Scientia as a Software Engineer which has provided me with a unique insight into the fast-paced life of a burgeoning start-up.

Focusing relentlessly on perfecting the company’s very first product and bringing the innovative fibre optics technology to market has been an exciting journey, enabling me to translate much of the theoretical knowledge garnered from my degree into practical solutions. Whilst doing so, I have also been able to enrich my itinerary of technical skills, understand good engineering practice and develop my methods of collaboration and problem solving.

It is a real privilege to work alongside the talented people at Nova Scientia and embrace the values held by the company. Surrounded by a firm culture of integrity has been inspiring, taking me out of my comfort zone in many instances (including a presentation to the entire company!). I have been able to learn so much from the team across various divisions, and I am eager to utilise and further build upon these newfound skills in the future.
